Frizzy hair is those strands of hair which behave like electrically-charged hair in those TV ads. They give an untamed look like you haven’t taken care of your manes in the way they demanded.
Well, we all have been there, especially those who have wavy or curly hair. As the wavy or curly hair can not withstand brushing when they are dry. Along with this, there are a lot of other mistakes we commit.

Let’s find out what can be done to make your hair smooth and shiny always without undergoing any unnatural or chemical keratin or straightening treatment. As chemical hair treatments are known to create frizz, hair loss, dandruff and hair thinning in about 95% of cases, this study found. Because nothing can replace the naturally glossy hair that shines from within!

Why Does Hair Become Frizzy?

  1. Not Enough Hydration – Your hair turns outwards when they are dehydrated and undernourished. Stop washing them every other day, as the shampoo strips away the oil and hydration in them.
  2. Less Nourished Hair – The undernourished hair look lifeless and becomes frizzy the moment you comb it.
  3. Brushing Dry Hair – Brushing dry hair builds a static charge in it and stands out and gives a more charged look.
  4. Tight woollen caps or headgear – Tight caps and headgear tend to stretch the hair from the roots and are the worst if you have dry, brittle hair.
  5. Using Plastic combs – Plastic combs tend to build a static charge faster and make your hair more frizzy. You must switch to wooden combs if you have dry, frizz-prone hair.

How to Tame Frizzy Hair Naturally?

  1. Shampoo twice a week – Even if you have a mild sulphate-free shampoo, shampooing every day or every alternate day is a big no-no.
  2. Pre-shampoo oiling is a must – Whether you keep the oiled hair for 30 minutes or overnight, oiling your hair before shampooing provides a protective sheet and nourishes it as well.
  3. Shampoo the right way – Use the shampoo only on your scalp and let that foam come to your hair length.
  4. Never ever Skip a conditioner – Conditioner is the only hydrating agent in this hair-cleansing regime. So never skip it and you will see a huge difference in your hair texture and smoothness.
  5. Apply serum every other day – Apply a good serum when your hair is still damp and use the serum every other day to tame the frizz.
  6. Use a hair protector at night – Wearing a silk satin bonnet at night is a game-changer for those who get up with all charged-up hair. It doubles up to protect your styled hair as it is and gives you another good-hair day!
  7. Comb only after applying serum – If you follow the curly girl method then you must be knowing this. Even if you don’t, just comb before shampooing and if you have to comb then, then do it when they are still damp, combing after applying the serum is also a good idea.
  8. Use the Right Shampoo – Sulphate-free or mild shampoos for wavy or curly hair are ideal for controlling frizz as they are hydrating and easy on frizz.
  9. Drink 8 to 10 glasses of water every day – Drinking a good amount of water goes a long way. It hydrates everything right from your organs to your skin and hair.
  10. Scalp massage before shampooing – A deep 2-3 minute massage is good enough to stimulate roots and ensure new hair growth. It also sets up the pace for a good hair day!
  11. Hair mask – Apply it once a week or once a fortnight, it will work wonders for your hair. My favourite hair masks are nathabit hair mask (in the budget) and you can make an amazing DIY hair shine mask at home like thisPlum Avocado mask for frizz-free hair (mid-range) and Loreal Absolut Repair Mask with Protein & Gold Quinoa for Dry & Damaged Hair(a bit pricey but worth it). More details on this are in my hair fall treatment article.
  12. Don’t use blow dryers – If you have absolutely no other option then use them on mild heat and apply a serum on them first. As direct heat will eventually make your hair more frizzy.
  13. Eat a protein-rich Diet – hair is made up of protein and when you eat protein in your diet, it shows in your hair as well. Don’t expect instant results, effects show in about 4 weeks. Some good sources of protein are lentils, chickpeas, paneer (Indian cottage cheese) and almonds.
  14. Walnuts and flaxseeds – Other than a protein-rich diet, walnuts and flaxseeds are your hair’s best friend as they are the powerhouse of omega-3 (the ultimate shine enhancer).
  15. Use a wooden comb or wooden hairbrush – This is really effective in removing the static charge.
  16. Scrunch and style with jelly – If you have wavy or curly hair, then fix my curls flaxseeds jelly is a good product to add definition and texture to your hair and control the frizz too. It has a downside to it, it may not give a natural feel to your hair until you scrunch the hell out of it.
  17. Use Hair Mist – If you are still high on frizz then use a hair mist made up of amla by boiling amla in water. You can simply strain it and keep it in a bottle. You can add the essential oil of your choice to make your hair smell good. Rosemary oil can be an ideal choice. You can use this mist on your hair length as well as on your scalp and style as usual. Amla or gooseberry water is the real nectar for hair.
  18. Use a good quality hair colour – The hair colour that you use can also be responsible for frizz and hair damage. Use reputed brands only.
  19. A simple hack – When you have styled your hair and you have those unnerving rebellious hair going out of the way of your style, then take a microfiber towel and cover your hair with it gently and remove it. It will remove the frizz for the time being!
  20. Hair Health depends upon Body Health– Any condition like PCOS, thyroid conditions and other hormonal disturbances can also harm hair health and make them frizzy. Make your health your priority and everything else will follow. A healthy lifestyle means healthy you and frizz-free hair.
