Do you see panda eyes in the mirror every morning? I understand how annoying dark circles around the eyes can be, the truth is that they won’t go overnight but with diligent efforts, they can vanish within 2 weeks!

In this blog post, we are going to find out the best ways to remove dark circles permanently, only those ways that really work!

First of all, let’s find out the cause of dark circles, so that you may get a heads-up in the beginning itself –

Why do dark circles occur?

  • Hereditary (they can still be tackled, read on to find out)
  • Deficiency of vitamin b12, vitamin K, E and D (That’s why mom always told you to eat fruits, veggies, nuts and ghee)
  • Irregular Sleep Cycle (some days you sleep at 2 am others at 12 am)
  • Inadequate Sleep (Ditch late-night Netflix and reels)
  • Smoking (You must quit because it’s definitely causing you more harm than dark circles)
  • Stress (Well, can’t control life but try to indulge in some creative activities)
  • Lots of screen time (Try to decrease the screen time, it will help you in many ways)
  • Allergies (Yes, they can actually cause dark circles)
  • Sun exposure (As the skin under the eyes is thinner than the whole face, it tends to tan easily if not protected well)
  • Dehydrated skin (Dehydrated skin is prone to dark circles, thinning and wrinkles)
  • Thyroid disease (Get yourself tested)
  • Excessive eye rubbing (Yes, simply rubbing your eyes often can cause dark circles as it can cause tiny capillaries to damage and harm the thin undereye skin)
  • Iron deficiency anaemia (Do you hate iron-rich food such as spinach, lentils, and tofu?)
  • Well, we all hate this but it’s Natural Ageing (you need to boost collagen production in your skin as our skin tends to lose it with age, more on this later in this article).

Topical remedies To Remove UnderEye Dark Circles at Home

Aloe vera Gel

My personal favourite, aloe vera gel is just one product army. Although it works slowly, it works for sure! Being non-comedogenic and hypoallergenic in nature, it is best to apply on the under-eye area. I use the simple & pocket-friendly (less than 100 INR) Patanjali Aloe Vera Gel nowadays and it contains 95% pure aloe vera gel and I personally like its Kesar variant more. Just apply this gel on your dark circles before sleeping and see them vanishing in just 2 weeks.

Apply it under your eyes before sleeping and wash it off in the morning. Works best as it is the best source of natural hyaluronic acid and makes the skin plumpy and boosts collagen production as well.

Vitamin C

The ultimate brightening vitamin that has been used to brighten up the whole face, can surely brighten up your undereye area too. Use an undereye vitamin C cream every night, make sure it’s gentle and always do a patch test near your elbow before applying.

Coconut oil

This Indian beauty secret is known for its amazing skin-lightening & skin-tightening properties. Just rub your undereye area with one drop of coconut oil on each side and get a good night’s sleep. Make sure it doesn’t come on your face as it can clog pores, so less is more. Other uses of coconut oil

Potato juice

Another rich source of vitamin C and this starchy veggie is a star in removing tanning from not just your under-eyes but from your whole body too. Just cut two thin slices of potato and keep them under your eyes or the better way is to make potato juice and add a pinch of turmeric to it. Soak a cotton pad in it and keep it over your dark circles for at least 30 minutes before washing it off.

Tea Bags

Enriched with cooling and calming properties, green tea bags are very effective in treating dark circles when kept regularly. Just save your green tea bags after brewing your tea and keep them in the fridge. Keep them on before your night sleep for about 30 minutes and enjoy the antioxidant boost.

Chilled Cucumber slices

Cucumber slices are always on the eyes in each and every skincare commercial, and they are there for a reason. As cucumbers are quite hydrating and cooling in nature, they tend to soothe tired eyes and reduce puffiness as well as dark circles. Just keep them on your eyes till you feel their cooling effect, 20 to 30 minutes is enough though.

Coffee Eye Masks By mCaffeine

This one is for the lazy bums who just can’t do all the fa-fa of cutting cucumber slices and putting them in the refrigerator for a while. You can use the coffee eye masks by Mcaffeine, the coffee-based skincare brand. Coffee can wake up your undereye skin as well, as it wakes you up. The rich antioxidants in it can give your under-eye area a quick boost but a good night’s sleep is irreplaceable. Just like Mcaffeine Eye Patches, Swiss Beauty eye patches are a good option too but I will vote for natural aloe vera and cucumber!

Carrot Ice Cubes

Nature’s retinol is in carrot seed and carrot juice, that’s why it not only helps remove dark circles under the eyes but helps to reduce fine lines as well. Just take a spoonful of carrot juice and apply it directly to your undereye area (this is the best & the easiest option) or make ice cubes of that juice and rub them for added cooling effect.

Simple cold compress

Yes, plain cold water and the cold compress are good enough to soothe your tired eyes and make the blood vessels constrict. This reduces puffiness and makes the area look more refreshed and pumped up. Make it a habit, you can do it with either ice globes or a spoon and keep it in the refrigerator for just 2 minutes. Make sure it is not uncomfortable.

Under Eye Cream

Well, there are a lot of them in the market but I can only vouch for those that I have found effective. I fell in love with the Innisfree green seed eye ball and it wiped the dark circles under my eyes after 2 weeks of regular application. But honestly, when I ran out of that tub, I didn’t buy another one as I have lots of natural options now and I love to sleep…zzz…..

Pure Almond Oil (rich in vitamin E)

How can it be possible that we talk about removing dark circles but don’t talk about vitamin E? It is the ultimate skin vitamin as it helps in removing dark circles and makes it glow! You can reap the benefits of almond oil’s vitamin E by rubbing one drop each under your eyes before sleeping. Some people even mix vitamin E capsule drops in it but I don’t think that’s required as almond is the powerhouse of vitamin E itself.

Grape seed oil

An acne-prone person’s best friend, grape seed oil is best for everything. This is non-comedogenic and I swear by its efficacy in this article where I ditched all skincare products and chose only natural products to cure my acne. This is great to remove dark circles under the eyes too.

Raw Milk

Ayurveda’s best-kept secret, raw milk has known to be the best exfoliator and skin-lightening agent. It is full of protein, calcium, and vitamin B2 along with many enzymes too. It acts as a cleanser, toner, and moisturizer and removes darkness from your undereye area and the whole face.

Honey

Another amazing ingredient that is highly moisturising, hydrating and full of antioxidants is honey. But if it gets in the eyes, it can cause a lot of irritation as well. Although it’s cleans eyes too but we can’t trust the purity of honey for that. So you can apply one honey drop under each eye, rub and keep it for 20 minutes then wash it off.

Get a Facial

Another soothing way to remove dark circles under the eyes permanently is to get a facial. It improves your blood supply and helps tighten the loosen-up skin and eye bags. Getting a facial once in 3 to 6 months goes a long way in boosting collagen production and helps in vanishing your dark circles as well.

Gentle Daily Massage Under Eyes to Remove Dark Circles

Do this every night before you sleep, take your under-eye gel/serum/natural ingredient and rub it delicately and tap your fingers on the undereye area. It increases blood supply, boosts collagen and it goes a long way to give your eyes that young plumpy look that you desire.

Lifestyle Changes To Remove Dark Circles Permanently

  • 6 to 8 hours of sleep with regular timings
  • A soft pillow that keeps your head in a relaxed and comfortable position
  • 8-10 glasses of water daily
  • Wear a hat and sunglasses when stepping out in the sun
  • Iron-rich food like food made in an iron wok, roasted chana, raisins,
  • Not more than 2 drinks even if you take them occasionally
  • Wear eyeglasses in the sun
  • Prefer hats and scarves when stepping out
  • Make friends with tomatoes, oranges, beetroot, watermelon
  • Just one serving of coffee every day
  • Reduce Screen time
  • Let your eyes relax on a daily basis (heard about meditation?)
  • Yoga and Pranayaam

Dermatology Office Treatments To Remove Dark Circles if everything else fails

  • Laser – Removes pigment from the undereye area thereby making them appear lighter. One may need more than two sittings as per the severity of the darkness under the eyes.
  • Chemical peels – They are best to remove the upper dead layer and reveal fresh glowing skin underneath. These chemical peels also need more than one sitting in most cases.
  • Fillers – The fillers are the injections of hyaluronic acid that help make the undereye area appear more plump. These are best for sunken eyes and reduce the appearance of dark circles as well.
  • Topical exfoliating acids like glycolic acid, kojic acid etc are also performed in dermatology clinics if you are not willing to go for more aggressive treatments like lasers and fillers.
