Holi is around the corner, it’s the perfect time to prepare our Gulal and herbal colors now!
Yes, you read it right. We are telling you simple ways to make your holi more fun and healthy.
With these herbal homemade colors, you won’t have to worry about your skin. These organic colors will give your skin a healthy glow with these amazing ingredients. Don’t worry we have the easiest trick for the lazy ones of us!
Here is the recipe for the homemade holi colors.
1. Burgundy Red
Beetroot – It gives amazingly bright color and is great for skin too. Grind the beetroots and make a paste. Let it dry in the sun. Mix with gram flour/besan or wheat flour.
Hibiscus Flowers – Dry these flowers, grind them. Mix with any flour of your choice to increase the quantity.
Palash or Tesu Flowers – They work well to give the amazing red color. Dry in shade, grind them and mix with flour.
2. Marigold Yellow
Turmeric – Mix 1 cup gram flour/besan with half cup turmeric/haldi. It will give a nice yellow color., but use this with caution as the turmeric can stain your clothes.
Marigold – 1 cup wheat flour (or any flour of your choice) + 1 teaspoon turmeric/haldi + 1 cup marigold flowers + 1 tablespoon orange peel powder + few drops of any essential oil, mix all these and your yellow Gulal is ready.
Marigold easy – Dry the flowers in shade along with the orange peels. Grind them and mix with the flour of your choice.
3. Sandalwood Brown
Sandalwood – Talk about spa and face packs! The sandalwood and fuller’s earth are known to make your skin supple and clean.
Use sandalwood powder or raktchandan ( the red sandalwood powder) and mix it with fuller’s earth or any flour of your choice.
4. Auspicious Green
Mehendi/Heena – Crush Mehendi leaves or use the powder and mix it with dried leaves of Gulmohar tree. You can add any flour too but it will lighten the color. Add any food color to enhance the shade. Mehandi will stain if gets wet.
5. You are the color-maker!
Here is our bonus, for all the lazy ones out there (like us :))
Mix any food color with water, add it to the gram flour/besan, let it dry and grind well. Voila!

For wet colors
you can mix
- Haldi/Turmeric with water (gives bright yellow color)
- Mehendi/Heena with Water (gives light green)
- Hibiscus flowers soaked overnight in water (gives bright red)
- Beetroots boiled and then diluted in water (gives magenta color)
- Indigo powder diluted in water (gives blue color)
