The mess becomes more pronounced when we start dealing with those bulky winter clothes. Here in India, we always keep our off-season clothes stored in the attic or the upper cabinets and the seasonal ones in the usual daily wardrobe.

So let’s get started!

Important Steps Before Organizing Your Winter Clothes
Wash & Dry Your Winter Clothes Properly
Make sure to wash, dry or dry clean your winter clothes as per the specific cloth instructions. Your all-winter clothes should be well-dried and smelling good. They must not be musty-smelling or damp.
Empty the Entire Cupboard or Wardrobe
Emptying your entire closet and sorting your clothes gives you a fair idea about your belongings. The famous organization expert, Marie Kondo advocates removing everything on the clean floor. So that you can sit and declutter.
Keep Only Those That Spark Joy
As per Marie Kondo, we should keep only those clothing items that spark joy. The ones you feel happy about, the ones which you keep like your priceless possessions are the ones you need to keep. Others can go to the donate pile and your wardrobe and you both will feel so much lighter after that.
Put Those Summer Clothes Away
This is one of the most essential parts of organizing your winter clothes. These clothes will clutter your wardrobe even more if you keep them in the same wardrobe. The best idea to put the off-season clothes away is to put them in storage containers neatly folded. Make sure you keep the properly washed and dried clothes in those storage containers.

Coats Organization
Wooden hangers or metal hangers are the best to keep your coats in place. Those heavy coats which came with their own hanger should be kept with them only. As per Konmari method of tidying up, you should keep the bulkiest clothes on your left and lighter ones on your right.
This gives a light feeling to your wardrobe and gives a clear view as well, just as shown in the picture below.
Caps/Beanies Organization
If you have a good number of caps and beanies then you can either designate a basket and keep them neatly folded and organized vertically in it.
OR You can also buy transparent drawers or drawer organisers and put your beanies in them.
For Caps, hanging them on hooks is the best idea so that they keep their shape without getting in your way. The back door hooks or one cap over the other can also work if you really don’t have space.

The socks almost always run havoc on the wardrobe, that’s why I keep them in the linen closet, within this DIY sock basket. Here are more DIY organization ideas, you may like.
Hoodies/Pullovers/Cardigans
These are delicate pieces of clothing and they need gentle handling. Folding them neatly and arranging them colour-wise in a pile is the ideal scenario.
However, if you are not feeling that crafty then simply folding them with care and placing them in a pile will work well. Here is the video on how to fold your pullovers, hoodies and cardigans, all can be folded the same way.

Bulky Sweaters
We all have those bulky sweaters that simply take half of the wardrobe space. Folding them this way can keep them from sliding down and once you fold them like the video shown below, my best advice is to keep them vertically arranged in an open box or container that can be kept well under the hanging space.
Winter Dresses
Hanging these dresses not by the shoulder but after folding them in half is the best winter clothes organization idea. I fold my sweater dresses through half the length and then place them on the hanger. This will prevent it from getting loose on the shoulders and will keep its shape too. Try to have a hanger that is either wooden or has a big base to prevent the fold crease.
Winter shoes
My mum loves shoes, she has a lot and a lot of them. So we put those winter shoes away in off seasons in containers or cardboard boxes. We take them out in the winter season, wash them and then use them.
But I recently came across this baking soda hack from one good thing. She sprinkles some baking soda in her winter shoes to prevent the mould and musty odour. You can simply take out the baking soda and use the winter shoes whenever required! What a genius Idea, I am going to try this one when I will be putting our winter shoes away after this season.
Hats Organization
Unlike caps, the hats can’t be put one over the other as their shape is quite pristine for that. So if you are a hat lover and have a lot of hats, then either invest in a hat stand or make use of the hooks. To prevent the hats from dusting, you can either install these hooks inside your walk-in closet (if you have one) or add some stick-on hooks on your wardrobe door. It will save space and you will have your lovely hats right there in front of you.
Shawls and Scarves
We Indians are so in love with our cultural heritage shawls. These shawls not only keep us warm in the chilly winter but also keep those beautiful memories of sitting on our grandmother’s lap and feeling the warmth of her hands and the shawl. It takes me back to my childhood right away. I am sure it does the same for you too.
If you have a lot of them, then this idea from Jesskeys comes in handy. Install these simple organizer baskets on a wardrobe door or anywhere for that matter and fold and arrange them as shown in the image below.
Jeans/ Pants/ Lowers
Fold them in three folds and keep them in a pile. This is one of the best methods to keep the bottoms in their best shape. You can also hang some of the pants which are on the pricier side and you absolutely need their creases well in place.
Winter Clothes and Vacuum Bags
I am not a fan of vacuum bags for any clothes, let alone winter clothes. The winter clothes are made of breathable material like wool or fleece etc. These materials are delicate and need to be handled with care.
Putting them in a plastic bag and vacuuming all the air out of them will only make them look wry. Don’t put your clothes through that ordeal.
Keep only those that spark joy in you, that you are planning to wear this season. Don’t overflow your wardrobes, there are people out there who need warm clothes, so donate them.
Things to Consider While Organizing Winter Clothes

- When you hang your clothes, arrange them as per their height. Long clothes should start from your left and on your right, there should be the cloth with the smallest height.
- Keep some empty perfume bottles in the corners of your almira or wardrobe, that will keep the moths away and your clothes will smell better.
- Read the instructions on your cloth tag carefully before folding or hanging it. As some clothes specifically say, ‘do not hang’. Keep the specific clothing requirements in mind while organizing them.
- If you are finding it difficult to arrange all your winter clothes in your wardrobe, then maybe you need the full Marie Kondo reset. Here is the article that will help you learn the Marie Kondo Method of Organizing.
