As ageing picks up pace as we turn 30 and older, the amount of collagen starts reducing, the new collagen formation slows down and the hormones also start to decline. The body starts to lose its youth really slowly and steadily.
While ageing is a part of the growing process, nobody likes it, and some smart habits and lifestyle changes can slow down the pace of ageing.
So there is no reason why we should not embrace these smart lifestyle changes that support hormone health, collagen production, keep the weight in check and overall keep you as active and healthy as in your 20s.
Table of Contents
1. Prioritise 8 Hours Sleep
As cliché as it sounds, sleep is important to help your body rejuvenate itself. Sleep is required for hormone production and for all your organs to function smoothly.
Making sure that you sleep and get up around the same time every day will keep your circadian rhythm and heart health in perfect shape.
Don’t overstimulate yourself with shorts and reels before sleeping, so try to keep a no-mobile routine in your bedroom at least an hour before sleep. Read something good or talk to your partner 🙂
2. Cut Down Sugar
Going easy on sugar will help retain your youth, as sugar is the literal collagen-destroyer (read collagen as youth). Other than Sugary foods, avoid carbonated drinks, and juices with extra sugar, too.
If you have a sweet tooth, keep one day in the week designated for a dessert treat. Reduce the amount of sugar in your daily cup of tea or coffee.
Those who have a hard time reducing sugar intake can switch to a less harmful version of sugar, like jaggery or honey, etc. But please remember that it is also a form of sugar, so keep it in moderate amounts.
3. 8,000 Steps a Day
Although more the merrier, 8k steps is the least you can do to keep your hormones moving. As hormones are the drivers of youth, young skin, better energy, and better health, along with reproductivity.
If you are a yoga fan, then you are already doing the best for your body, but walking is still required. Pranayam (breathing exercises) also go a long way in keeping your health in check.
Also, walking and other physical activities are known to reduce stress and are great for your muscles and bones, too.
4. Take Your Multivitamins
Your best bet? See your physician and get the best multivitamins prescribed for you as per your age and health. Then take your supplements like your life depends on them, because it literally does.
For example, you need to take vitamin E to lower the testosterone levels (if you are a woman, of course) and to boost your skin glow. While you may need to take a vitamin B complex if you often suffer from mouth ulcers and have difficulty concentrating, grey hair, and other signs of vitamin B12 deficiency. Vitamin D reduces the risk of breast cancer by 80%.
So these vitamins are super important for you to keep yourself in the best health, but getting these prescribed by your doctor is also important.
5. Increase Your Protein Intake
Protein is important for hormone production, your hair are made up of protein and your whole body’s building block is a kind of protein.
However, our food (especially vegetarian and vegan food) lacks in protein, so in order to increase your protein consumption, eat these protein-rich foods daily such as chickpeas (chole), paneer, pulses (dal), and all kinds of beans such as rajma, peas, lobia etc.
You need roughly 0.8g per kg protein in your diet daily, so if your weight is 60kg then you need 48 gms of protein daily.
The gym-goers, pregnant and lactating moms and people with very active lifestyle may need about 1g per kg protein or more, but always ask your doctor first.
You can take one sachet of this whey protein daily then you will not have to worry much about your protein intake. Do ask your doctor before taking protein powders as they are not recommended for people with kidney or heart problems.
