Carrier oil is an oil that can be applied directly to the skin. Carrier oil for acne-prone skin and scars may seem a bit odd but believe me it’s a boon when used in the right amount and with the right oil.
A lack of linoleic acid, the essential fatty acid has been found in people who suffer from acne. That means if your skin is acne prone, it is most likely to be deficient in essential fatty acids like linoleic acid. That is why you need a carrier oil to treat acne and acne scars as well.
This carrier oil must be rich in fatty acids and non-comedogenic as well. That is, it must not block the pores, must be antimicrobial and must have the hydration properties to give the skin a young look and clear the acne & acne scars as well.
After trying many carrier oils for acne and acne scars, I fell in love with this humble, affordable and non-comedogenic carrier oil for acne-prone skin, the Grapeseed oil!

Yes, it fades acne scars and reduces the appearance of pregnancy masks too.
It fades acne scars as it contains proanthocyanidin, an antioxidant that helps reduce acne scars and all pigmentation when used consistently for a few weeks.
It also makes the vitamin E and C more potent and activates them even if they are inactive (source). So whatever remedy you will choose to brighten up your skin, grapeseed oil will only enhance the effect.
It evens out the skin tone too.

How to Apply the carrier oil for Acne Prone Skin and Scars
- Make a Nanoemulgel – In this new technique, oil is mixed with the gel to make it more potent and easily absorbed by the skin. When used in this form the grapeseed oil decreased the large pores, treated scars and pigmentation and oil production as well (source). Just mix a few drops of grapeseed oil in the aloe vera gel and apply it as moisturizer gel on the face and enjoy the benefits. You can apply this nanoemulgel (source) in summer too without blocking pores and feeling oily.

- Add it to a hydrating mask – If you are using any cooling face packs or masks for summer acne then you can add a few drops of grapeseed oil to it to make it more anti-acne as well as hydrating.
Things to Consider while Applying any Carrier Oil for Acne-Prone Skin
- Choose your oil as per the weather – Yes, the skincare changes as the weather changes, I won’t advise you to use any oil on your skin in summer. My acne-prone skin turns super oily when I use grapeseed oil in hot weather. So I always switch to a gel-based moisturizer in summer and this grapeseed oil in winter. Here is my complete natural skincare routing to prevent & treat acne
- Always start with one drop – One drop is enough when you are just introducing any oil to your acne-prone skin. Don’t take a coin-sized amount in one go and go all ga-ga about it. Start slow, in skincare, less is more. As you progress, and your skin accepts it, you go for 2-3 drops for a one-time application.
- Always apply the carrier oils on clean skin – Make sure your skin is clean before locking the oil in it. You can either use a Cetaphil facewash or this DIY acne facewash to clean your skin so that no dirt or bacteria get sandwiched between your skin and the oil.
- Patch Test – Whenever you are trying something new, always do a patch test on the inner side of your elbow and sleep. If the area stays good for the next 24 hours, only then apply it to your face.
- Use as Night moisturizer – Using the carrier oils at night is a better option as the product gets time to work upon and sweat and dust don’t get stuck to it. You can apply it any time of the day though, as per your routine.
Other Non-comedogenic Carrier Oils for Acne
- Jojoba oil – easily absorbed, healing properties, non-comedogenic
- Rosehip Seed oil – gives a healthy shine and works well on acne scars
- Evening Primrose oil – high in linoleic acid, works well for acne, decreases breakouts
- Sesame oil – instantly hydrates, but go easy on it as it tends to be a bit heavy on the skin, look for pure oil only
Which carrier oils should not be used on acne-prone skin?
Don’t use comedogenic oils on your face if you have acne-prone skin, like coconut oil, palm oil, vegetable oil, mustard oil etc. I found almond oil to be comedogenic as well, it always breaks me out whenever I apply it, it is thick and pure vitamin E so it can be a boon for a dry skin person but not suitable for acne-prone skin.
