Toners are an essential part of the daily skincare routine. It can be either store-bought or homemade. In this article, we will talk about a homemade long-lasting DIY toner for acne-prone oily skin that you can use daily without any side effects.

It has incredible benefits in removing acne-causing bacteria from the skin and closing pores. I have been using this toner for more than 4 months now and I am totally in love with this one as it has cleared my acne completely and it works really fast in terms of treating the old acne as well.

So let’s get started!

Apple Cider Toner For Acne

Yes, one of the most important and the main DIY toner is Apple Cider Vinegar. Enriched with various properties, it is anti-bacterial, anti-microbial, rich in anti-oxidants, anti-acne, and rich in vitamin C (thereby good for acne scars and pigmentation as well).

How to Make Apple Cider Vinegar Toner for Acne Prone Skin

Take a clean bottle, add half part of the apple cider vinegar with mother in it and add half part of the drinking water (2 tablespoon Apple Cider Vinegar and 2 tablespoon drinking water).

Shake it well. And your DIY toner is ready in just one minute!

There are many other benefits of Apple Cider vinegar too.

Other Optional Additions To the ACV Toner

  • 1 teaspoon of rosewater
  • 1 teaspoon of brewed green tea water
  • A few drops of essential oil

How to Use Apple Cider Toner Daily?

Take a clean cotton swab, and shake the bottle well before every use as the mother particles tend to settle down in the bottle.

Now open the cap of the bottle and take some drops of it on the cotton swab and wipe your face gently with it.

Let it work for about 1 minute, then use your moisturizer or the aloe vera gel as per your skincare routine for acne.

The benefits of this DIY toner for acne have been proven due to its antibacterial nature when used daily on the face after dilution (source).

What does Apple Cider Vinegar with Mother Means?

Simply Apple cider vinegar with mother means that it still has that bacteria in it that it came from. That further means that the vinegar is natural and in its unrefined form. This makes the ACV with the mother more effective than the one without it.

That’s why ACV with Mother is preferred for all DIY recipes and for health benefits as well.

Side-effects of Apple cider vinegar toner

  • It can cause skin burns if used undiluted.
  • Can be irritating to sensitive skin
  • Can cause more dryness in the dry skin

Why do we use Toners?

Toners have the property to go inside your pores in the skin and clean them meticulously. They are also known to tighten the skin and reduce the appearance of pores on the skin. As cleaned and unclogged pores are barely noticeable. They are noticeable only when they are clogged or have blackheads.

Ageing skin needs toners to remove the last traces of dirt, bacteria and grime and give a more clean and tighter appearance to the skin.

It also creates a better ground and a clean slate for the next step in the skincare routine which is moisturiser.

A toner also restores the skin’s pH, that is its natural state where it looks healthy and happy! More info about skin pH

Other Options for DIY Toners for Acne Prone Oily Skin

If you don’t want to go for this amazing but smelly DIY toner for acne then you can opt for pixi glow tonic for acne. You can read my whole review on it here. Other DIY toners that I have found good and easy to use are –

1. Aloe vera toner

Lady removing aloe vera gel from its leaf

The most loved skincare ingredient of our times, Aloe vera is a multitasker. You can use it for so many purposes and it is always rewarding.

How to make aloe vera toner

Mix aloe vera juice in the rose water and use it as a toner. If you are using fresh aloe vera, then it won’t last longer than 2-3 days.

2. Rose Water toner

rosewater benefits

Rose water is quite hydrating, smells so good, and is calming on the skin too. However, it is not as effective on acne as the apple cider vinegar toner.

How to make rose water toner

Use rose water as a toner as it is. It helps clean and tone the skin due to the astringent and anti-ageing properties of rose.

3. Green Tea Toner for Acne

Green tea in cups

Another hero ingredient that is a brave acne-fighter is green tea. Rich in antioxidants, fights bacteria and is great for soothing the skin too.

How to make a green tea toner

Take one cup of water and bring it to a boil. Put a green tea bag in it and let it brew and cool for 20 minutes. Now add it to a bottle and use it as a toner.
You need to keep it in the refrigerator to increase its shelf life.

4. Witch Hazel Toner

I will be honest with you, I haven’t tried it yet but I have heard a lot about witch hazel effects for acne. As it is anti-inflammatory and soothing for the skin too.

How to make a witch hazel toner

Add half a cup of witch hazel with 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar and add 1/4rth cup of drinking water. Mix well and keep it in a spray bottle.

The Downside of DIY Toners

  • Other than the apple cider vinegar toner, no toner will last longer on your shelf.
  • You will need to discard all the other DIY toners after 2 days that too when they are refrigerated.
  • They all need patch testing before trying each new toner for acne-prone skin.

Conclusion

Making a good toner at home not only saves you from spending a lot on expensive toners but treats acne well too.

The apple cider vinegar toner has a good shelf life of more than a month even at room temperature. However other DIY toners for acne-prone oily skin need to be refrigerated and need to remake after every 2-3 days.

So doing a few tweaks to the apple cider vinegar toner is advised to save yourself from the hassle. Add green tea in the first batch of ACV toner, then add witch hazel in the next and so on.

DIY toners can be customised as per your choice and convenience, but make sure you know how to make these before you set to experiment and never forget a patch test before applying it on your face.

Always follow the toner with a carrier oil for acne on winter nights and a DIY gel moisturiser in summer.
